this is it
the battle you've been waiting for
house cat versus stray
nature versus nuture
circling each other
in my kitchen
the hissing
the growling
the claws swiping air
testing boundaries
warning
don't come any closer
or else
if the house cat wins
everything our parents said
was true
if the stray wins
we are indeed savages
no better than trash scavengers
I'm watching
filling the food dish
the great provider
and they look my way
at that maraca sound of feeding time
the war is over
before it began
because we're nurtured
to let surviving
come naturally
and survival always finds a way
to survive
