National Poetry Month 2011, Day #9: Total Eclipse

Tom Waits sang,
"The night does funny things inside a man,"

well, Tom, that's a really clever way of saying
a man would make love to the moon if he could

because it's always there

wearing the starry sky like a bedazzled cocktail dress
her atmospheric negligee

because nothing's funny about falling asleep
with the phone in your hand
the modern age has endangered the busy signal
now it's straight to voice mail
straight to her voice

but the moon always answers
the moon is always there in her many stages
wide-eyed or with that crooked sliver smile
or even in the rare event of a total eclipse

when families look outside and point
and fathers tell their sons,

"Look, that's where the moon should be."
